NLNAC Proposed Rule Change of Qualification for
PN Educators

The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission, Inc. has proposed changes to Criterion #5: Faculty for Practical Nursing Programs.  Based on NLNAC's policy #11, the proposed changes are open to review and comment.  PN Educators are strongly encouraged to take this opportunity to voice their opinions on the rule changes.  Here is a summary of those proposed changes:

Criterion 5: Faculty members (full-time and part-time) are academically and experientially qualified, and maintain expertise in their areas of responsibility . Documentation confirms:
Current
Proposed
a. nursing faculty are credentialed with a minimum of a master’s degree with a major in nursing a. majority of full-time nursing faculty engaged in didactic teaching are credentialed with a minimum of a master’s degree in nursing from a regionally accredited institution.
b. rationale for acceptance of other than the minimum required graduate credential deleted (see new proposed be below)
  b. majority of part-time nursing faculty are credentialed with a minimum of a master’s degree with a major in nursing from a regionally accredited institution.
Proposed new "c" does not replace any current c. remaining nursing faculty, both full and part-time, are credentialed with a minimum of a baccalaureate degree in nursing with current evidence of one of the following: progress towards a master’s degree in nursing, evidence of course work, continuing education, or certification relevant to current teaching role.
c. faculty credentials meet the requirements of the governing organization and any state agency which has legal authority for educational programs in nursing. d. faculty credentials meet the requirements of the governing organization and any state agency for educational programs in nursing.
d. academic and experiential preparation and variety of faculty backgrounds (full-time and part-time) are appropriate for responsibilities of the nursing unit. e. academic and experiential preparation and variety of faculty backgrounds (full-time and part-time) are appropriate for responsibilities of the nursing unit.
