~ School of Practical Nursing ~
(Diploma Program)

The School of Practical Nursing is an eleven-month, full-time educational Program consisting of classroom and clinical education in the art and science of nursing. This program is part of the Riverside School of Health Careers. The clinical education portion of the curriculum is conducted in the facilities of Riverside Health System and in various community healthcare settings. The School of Practical Nursing has been operated by Riverside and affiliated with Newport News Public School System since 1961. Graduates are eligible to sit for the National Council Licensing Examination for Practical Nursing to qualify for licensure as a Practical Nurse.

~ Admission Requirements ~

It is the intent of Riverside School of Health Careers to evaluate an applicant in a manner that focuses on the “whole person”. Qualified applicants are accepted regardless of race, sex, age, disability, color, religion or national origin. The following areas of consideration are used:

  • Minimum educational requirement is graduation from an accredited high school or GED certification, (transcript required)
  • Completed, legible, accurate signed application with essay
  • Pre-admission test scores on academic aptitude, spelling, natural sciences, judgment and comprehension, and vocational adjustment
  • Personal interview
  • Previous education, employment or community involvement history
  • Completed academic and/or professional references
  • College transcript(s) if applicable
  • Ability to meet essential program requirements

 

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS

  • 98% of our graduates, on average, pass the National Council Licensing Exam for Practical Nurses. The passing rate has been consistently higher than the national average since the school opened in 1961.
  • Since 1996, of those graduates responding to the post graduation survey; 100% are employed in nursing; 100% rated the quality of their education good to excellent; 100% felt the program prepared them for licensure exam and practice.
  • New campus in 2005, offering contemporary facilities and state-of-the- art equipment.
  • Financial Aid is available.

In addition to School of Practical Nursing tuition and fee costs, the student is required to be medically cleared through Riverside School of Health Careers Student Health Service. CPR certification for the healthcare provider is required by date published in acceptance materials. Program graduates are eligible to apply for licensure from the Virginia Board of Nursing to sit for the NCLEXCAT-PN (National Council Licensing Examination for Practical Nursing Computerized Adaptive Testing). Application to the Board is a student responsibility and additional fees are charged.

Student Nurses will be subject to and agree to abide by Riverside School of Health Careers & Riverside Health Systems policies, procedures, rules, and practices. Student Nurses may be required to agree to and submit to alcohol and/or substance abuse screening. Criminal background checks, reference checks, or investigations are conducted in accordance with applicable Riverside School of Health Careers policies and/or practices.
